Oi! Workshop
From confused to included
Finding connection through everyday language
Oi! Workshop is a proposed 90-minute café workshop for international students who are new to Melbourne. It uses Australian slang as a starting point for conversation, making and cultural exchange. Five activities guide participants from guessing unfamiliar words to creating their own phrasebook and trying new expressions in everyday life.
Participants are also invited to share expressions from their own languages, making the experience a two-way cultural exchange. Guessing, drawing, collage and reaction stickers offer different, low-pressure ways to take part.

Visual identity
An invitation to join in
Playful lettering, a brush-shaped banner and bright colour variations give Oi! an informal, social character. Orange and navy energise the guessing cards, while green connects the worksheet, phrasebook and stickers. Shared typography and the logo hold the different tools together.

Slang Cards
A set of 12 real and invented slang cards starts the conversation. Participants vote before the meaning is revealed. Large words on the front and an answer on the reverse create a quick, shared guessing game.
02 / 20 minutes
Worksheet
An A5 decode sheet places slang in everyday conversations. Working in pairs, participants use context to write their guesses before sharing answers. The illustrated reverse brings a teammate’s Australian imagery into the toolkit.
03 / 25 minutes
Phrasebook
Four zones guide participants from choosing three phrases to imagining when to use them, drawing a memory hook and sharing an expression from home. A quieter layout leaves room for handwriting, sketches and collage.
04 / 10 minutes
Reaction Stickers
Six short reactions give participants a simple way to respond to one another’s phrasebooks. Labels such as “Teach me” and “Used this!” turn feedback into a small visual exchange, with no need for a long spoken explanation.
05 / 20 minutes
Pocket Card
A double-sided take-away card extends the activity beyond the café. One side records three phrases to try; the other provides a seven-day tracker for using them in everyday situations.
Carrying a sense of place
The team’s illustrations extend the identity onto everyday objects such as notebooks, laptops and bottles. Local architecture, transport and natural imagery add recognisable references to the workshop’s visual world.
